Christmas Traditions You Can Teach Your Children
There are so many Christmas traditions practiced through time. These have been kept alive by teaching them to the next generation. When you have kids, you should make it your duty to pass these traditions on to them. But among the many Christmas traditions, which ones should you teach them?
Here are 3 good ones you can pass on to your children:
The giving of gifts. Probably the most well known and widely practiced of all Christmas traditions in both Eastern and Western cultures. Teaching your kids to give will provide an opportunity for you to share the truth about giving during Christmas. You can tell them about the wise men who gave costly gifts to Jesus Christ without expecting anything in return. Open their eyes to the joy of giving to the less fortunate ones. This will encourage them to love and to continue doing acts of good will. Don't forget to tell them about the greatest gift of all—Jesus Christ the Son, the Father's gift.
Celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Festivities can lead the children to think about the true meaning of Christmas: the birth of Christ in Bethlehem, the real reason for all these Christmas traditions. Your family can attend worship services, sing Christmas songs, listen to recitals and enjoy plays. Read the story of Christmas together, you can find it in the Bible (Luke 2:1-18).
Celebrating on Christmas Day. Most of the Western parts celebrate Christmas on December 25. This day is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, but it is also important to let your kids know that this isn't the exact date, just the agreed upon date. Christmas day isn't just to have fun at parties and other festivities, but also a time to remember the very important person who came to be in this world for the good of us all.
Once your kids understand all this, you won't have to worry about the tradition dying as time goes by. Your children, in turn, can pass whatever Christmas traditions you have taught them to their own children. If you wish, you can tell them about more of these practices, because the more they know and understand; the better. No use in having celebrations when those celebrating don't even know the reason. Armed with the truth, you can now truly enjoy the meaning of Christmas with your family!
