Christmas Decorating For the Thrifty Shopper

With the popularity of Christmas, it comes as no surprise that most homes will do some sort of Christmas decorating this year as they do every year.

This Christmas season may hold one difference though. As our economy is still recovering from shaky ground, many families are being much more budget conscious with Christmas decorating than ever before. Still more families don't have the money for decorating at all.

While decorating for Christmas may seem like one of the extras that you have to avoid this year, there are ways to decorate your home for Christmas without spending a lot of money.

For each individual there will be a different definition for low-cost decorations.

Depending on your budget, a good deal may be as little as $1 while for someone else it may be $20 or $30. Define what you can and want to spend and go from there.

You may be one of the lucky ones who decorated last year and still has most of the decorations on hand. If this is the case, you may not have to spend a dime to get your home Christmas ready. With your used items on hand you might want to supplement with a few used items from other people. Hit some yard sales and see what treasures you may find for pennies on the dollar.

You could also check out the auction sites online to get an even bigger choice of Christmas decorations for less.

If you are staring your decorating from scratch, or have the budget for new Christmas decorations but still don't want to spend a fortune, there are a few places to shop first to see what bargains you can find.

Your local dollar store will usually carry an amazing selection of Christmas items from decorations to Christmas themed towels and potholders. These items can be found for a dollar or less so you can stretch your decorating dollar a little further.

Discount stores are next in line. While these places will be a little more expensive than the dollar store, they usually have a good selection of decorations for around $5.

Your best bet, if you are a crafty person, may be to make your own decorations.

In some cases you can even use items that are around your house. You may even be able to start with an old Christmas decoration and just revamp it with some ribbon or a bow and have a decoration that looks new.

Another great idea is to take a regular candleholder and, with a few Christmas decorations and a little creativity, turn it in to a Christmas themed centerpiece.

Decorating for Christmas doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. You can bring the holidays in to your home and stay on a budget with a little planning and some smart shopping.
